What's the story behind the name "Brighten Your Corner"?

I grew up 'just knowing' that my grandma used a wheelchair. She lived with my family since before I was born. She had Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.) and hadn't been able to walk for most of her life. Most of her time was spent seated in her comfy lazy-boy in her corner of our living room. Although her body was confined to a chair, she refused to be 'confined'! She was always trying to find ways to brighten someone else's day - always wanting to do for others.

One of her favorite songs was "Brighten the Corner Where You Are". It is an old hymn - and was something she lived. She set an example for everyone whom she met.

Her giving spirit was returned to her in so many ways. One memorable person who gave back was Dave Ewing of Ewing Chevrolet. He knew how much of a Cleveland Indians fan she was. So he would invite some of the Indians including Brook Jacoby & Carlos Baerga to stop by and say, "Hi!" I think they were blown away when she would recite each innings' activities from the night before.

Grandma set such an awesome example, her favorite song was the natural choice when choosing a name for my business. I decided that I wanted the result of everything I did to brighten the day of someone else!

In searching the internet, I came across this poem - the author was unknown. (If you find out who the author is, please let me know, and I'll send you a surprise to thank you!)

We cannot all be famous
or be listed in "Who's Who",
But every person, great or small,
has important work to do.

For seldom do we realize
the importance of small deeds,
Or to what degree of greatness
unnoticed kindness leads.

For it's not the big celebrity
in a world of fame and praise,
But it's doing unpretentiously
in an undistinguished way.

The work that God assigned to us,
unimportant as it seems,
That makes our task outstanding,
and brings reality to dreams.

So do not sit and idly wish
for wider, new dimensions
where you can put into practice,
your many good intentions.

But at the spot God placed you
begin at once to do,
Little things to brighten up
the lives surrounding you.

If everybody brightened up
the spot where their standing,
By being more considerate,
and a little less demanding.

This dark old world would very soon
eclipse the evening star,
If everybody brightened up
the corner where they are!
